Put L&L On Your Grocery List

We chat with Lynn Cheek of L&L Discount Foods

By Ashley Daniels

Along with our brave heroes on the front lines in hospitals who are healing those suffering from COVID-19, there are also those essential business owners that remain open with food on their shelves to feed the local community.

Lynn and Leroy Cheek, husband-and-wife owners of L&L Discount Foods in downtown Cheraw, is one of those lifesavers. They took over the grocery store in January and changed the name, but Lynn had previously worked there for the last five-plus years.

What hasn’t changed is their inventory, as what you would expect stocked at any market, complete with fresh and frozen foods, cleaning supplies, paper supplies, and some automotive items.

“But we’re way cheaper,” says Lynn. “We get a lot of the same things that people can get at IGA – we order from the same companies. But because we don’t have the overhead, our prices are a lot cheaper than they are.”

Lynn is finding that L&L customers, like everywhere else nowadays, are on the heightened hunt for bleach and cleaners. But what you may not find at those competitors that are big sellers at L&L are crab legs and oxtails. So it’s worth it to peruse the store.

“The biggest difference between us and a regular grocery store is that they’re set up to have the same products every single day,” says Lynn. “We may not have that, depending on if there’s a good deal on something and whether or not the price went up on something – we’ll wait a day or two until it comes back down. For instance, we usually sell a pound of bacon for $2.50, which you can’t normally get at grocery stores. We try to make sure that our prices are cheaper than the average store.”

The family-owned store is also family-oriented. Curbside pickup was something they’ve always done for customers who needed that service.

“If you come up to the door and your kids are asleep in the car, just let me know and I’ll come out there and stay with your kids while you shop,” says Lynn. “We don’t mind doing stuff like that. Not everybody is able to come in or has the ability to leave their children at home.”

L&L is also dedicated to helping out their community. Through a plea from the police department, they recently purchased an iPad for a local hospital so patients could contact their family.

The Cheeks just celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary and are the busy parents of six children. When they manage to have some free time, Lynn says she likes to read a good book and her husband likes to hunt and fish.
