Talking Shop… barber shop

We have a conversation with Frank Shields of Cheraw’s mainstay Kollock Barber Shop

Kollock Barber Shop

It has stood as a physical landmark in downtown Cheraw for nearly a century, but it’s more than the four walls of the Kollock Barber Shop that have impacted the community. It’s about the people standing behind the chairs.

Take, for instance, head barber Frank Shields. He’s worked at the family-owned Kollock Barber Shop for about 50 years and now works alongside his son, Calvin Shields. Over the past half-century, he’s not only received plenty of hands-on training in barber services, but he’s also learned a thing or two about the men who have walked through the door.

“I learned a lot from the people and how they’ve helped me,” says Shields. “And I’ve also learned how to treat people, and that’s by having the same good attitude for everybody coming in.”

Shields says he’s still staying busy, sometimes serving up to 20 clients a day, from haircuts, trims, grooms, and fades to cutting and grooming men’s facial hair.

Online reviews rave about the professional service and prices at Kollock Barber Shop. One customer, Theodore Lindsey, says, “I’ve been using this barbershop for 38 years!” Another claims that “Mr. Frank is the best!”

And, yet another commented on how the business had the best barbershop talk. Because that’s what the barbershop serves as for men in the neighborhood: a place to fellowship, catch up and let their guard down in a supportive environment.

“I’d say there’s probably about three or four generations of people who have become regulars here,” says Shields. “It’s probably about the oldest place around in business right now for a reason.”

If you’d like to drop in to Kollock Barber Shop for a haircut or some good, old-fashioned conversation, visit their location at 270 Second Street in Cheraw or call 843-537-5779.
